The theme of the first CIVIC Billboard competition is "HOW DO WE WANT TO BE IN TOUCH?". Thirty-one people – students, staff and alumnae:i – participated with 43 submissions. Here they are. Also, mark your calendar for October 19, 2023 at 6 pm, when the billboard will be inaugurated.
In the morning of July 11, 2023 the CIVIC Billboard jury came together, hosted by Matylda Krzykowski, Artistic Lead of CIVIC. 43 submissions to the first competition were displayed anonymously on the wall as A3 prints.
In the first round, the jury had time to look at all the motifs. Everyone selected three designs they would consider for an artistic, visual, and site-specific display on the exterior facade of the HGK Basel Pavilion. The final ten designs were discussed collectively after two additional rounds. As part of the process, the intention was to convey a possible message to the public and to connect with each other.
Last but not least, three designs were evaluated by focusing on the following statements and questions: Is it an image or a graphic? Is it a text? What is the underlying layer or message? Is it possible for me or the viewer to access this layer? Are the students feeling represented? Does the image resonate and endure? Would this be an artwork that one would want to see every day? All things are stronger when they are big! What should its strength be?

“Putting Our Heads Together”
Linus Weber, BA student at Institute Art Gender Nature (IAGN)
About the submission by Linus Weber:
For the first time the jury saw it, the immediate reaction was: “What is it? It feels so weird… First you spot the flowers, then recognise the bacteria and then give attention to the characters with hearts in the eyes that seem to get closer to each other. From there all other playful meanings emerge. The more we look at it, it becomes a bit post corona. A state, an opportunity to be with each other again. This work has illustrative and narrative qualities of a reality that passed and a desired reality of love and care we want to have. If you pass by, by tram or on a bike, and you see only a text, you instantly know what it says. With Linus`s motif it’s different, you will try to figure out every day what it says, how it feels, or what it could be. The more you look at it, the more interpretations arise. Because there is a detailed, oversaturated image, the viewers can immerse themselves. You are building stories, your own stories. It represents us students well.”
The inauguration of the billboard will take place on October 19, 2023 at 6 pm.

2nd Prize
Tashi Brauen, Artist + formerly studying at Institute Art Gender Nature (IAGN)
About the submission by Tashi Brauen:
The discussion started with “Did you really ask yourself how you want to be touched?” and continued to: “We appreciate the direct question but it lacks expression, it is too sterile. It's layouted with black typo and white background like something that is asked but won't happen due to the lack of care. Therefore it might feel like advertising. For us, not only the look but also the feeling of the billboard is important. However, the question of consent is something valuable to be reminded of everyday!.”
3rd Prize
Cassidy Toner, Artist + formerly studying at Institute Art Gender Nature (IAGN)
About the submission by Cassidy Toner:
“It feels like the end of the world or the beginning of the world.” That day of the jury meeting it was 38 degrees in Basel. “The sky and the sun seems like a depiction of the temperature of today. The horizon looks dangerous and the sun seems to be intensely squeezed by the hand. It is alluring, but when driving past the thumb could be read as a penis.”
